Lowering blood sugar levels may improve memory in older adults with diabetes. Grapefruit is also a marvelous aid to lowering blood glucose levels. Lowering Blood Sugar Level is also called in medical terms as "Hypoglicemia". Hypoglycemia occurs when our blood glucose level drops too low to provide enough energy for our body.
We eat for a variety of reasons and particularly to satisfy hunger but it is not always that block and white. Sometimes we eat socially, out of boredom, to freshen health. But can we eat to reduce high blood sugar ? Some diabetics who are fanatical about their control will not eat when blood glucose exceeds 9.0 or some other self appointed limit. When blood glucose is above this limit, insulin may be taken by them to rectify the high and they will not eat until the level has fallen below their limit. Others will take their insulin and snack on carb free food as an appetizer before the main mean to give the insulin some extra time to reduce blood glucose levels.
There are some foods that we can eat which not only are carb free but also seem to have hypoglycaemic properties.
Standard artichoks (the leafy bulbs) is the vegetable that has hypoglycaemic properties. Similarly, Toursi is a Greek appetizer which consists of any variety of vegetables marinated in vinegar. It is the venegar of this product that is believed to be the cause of its hypoglycaemic quality. Commonly a mixture of cabbage, cauliflouwer and carot, a small serve of this dish is useful for lowering blood sugar level and all these foods are useful to be eaten in accompaniment to a high carb meal.
Herbs and leaves such as Rocket, Funnel and Basil also have hypoglycaemic qualities and are g reat to put in salads or eaten alone. Onion also has the same quality. Of all these foods, grapefruit is the only one with a measured amount of carb so the effect of this fruit on blood glucose may vary but we will have to be particularly mindful of the carb content of this food. Grapefruit is also a marvelous aid to lowering blood glucose levels. However, we should not let diabetes make us afraid and resentful of food and know that there are things we can eat even when our blood glucose monitor implies that we should not enjoy.
