The blood glucose level is the amount of glucose in the blood. Glucose is nothing but a sugar that comes from the foods that we eat and it is also formed and stored inside our body. It is the main source of energy for the cells of our body and it is carried to each cell through the bloodstream.
High blood sugar levels happen only when the body either cannot make insulin or cannot respond to insulin properly. The body needs insulin so glucose in the blood.
Having too much sugar in the blood for long periods of time can cause serious health problems if it is not treated. This can cause serious damage to the vessels that supply blood to vital organs, which can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, vision problems and nerve problems in people with diabetes. These problems donot usually show up in kids or teens with diabetes who have had the disease for only a few years. However, these health problems can occur in adulthood in some people with diabetes particularly when they have not managed or controlled their diabetes properly.
Blood sugar levels are considered high when they are above the target range.
The causes of high blood sugar levels in people with diabetes could vary from the medicines you take and the food that you eat besides the factor of the amount of exercise you do. All three need to be balanced. In general, higher than normal blood glucose levels can be caused by several factors, including not taking your diabetes medicines when you are supposed to or not taking the right amounts and not following the meal plan (like eating too much on a special occasion without adjusting your diabetes medicines), not getting enough exercise, having an illness like the flue or stress, taking other kinds of medicines that affect how your diabetes medicines work.
A single high blood sugar reading usually is not cause for alarm as it happens to everyone with diabetes from time to time. However, if you are having blood sugar levels a lot, let your parents and your diabetes health care team know. Insulin or meal plans may need adjusting or you may have an equipment issue, like an insulin pump that is not working properly. Whatever be the case, make sure you get help so that you can get your blood sugar levels back under control.
